Down From 10

Friends, it’s my latest collaborative project! Between the production of books 1 and 2 of J.D. Sawyer’s Antithesis series, Mr. Sawyer is releasing a shorter work called Down From Ten. It’s a ‘country house mystery’ that’s fully dramatized with actors, sound effects and original music. by me

In early January, a group of friends get together for an annual retreat; eight artists, scientists, and authors cloistered together in a mansion in the mountains above Redding, California for ten days of games, conversation, exhibition, and hedonism, while isolated from the outside world. It might all have been quite pleasant, if it weren’t for the biggest California snowstorm in over twenty years. When the storm hits, the house is buried in an avalanche, leaving our heroes with no way to hike out. Instead, they must find a way to survive and stay sane while waiting for rescue - which becomes difficult when they all start having the same dream.

A comedy in the tradition of The Shining and A Clockwork Orange, a romance in the tradition of Clue and Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency, and a mystery in the tradition of Paint Your Wagon and Time Enough For Love, Down From Ten will thrill you a little, chill you a little, and tickle your fancy in ways you wouldn’t want your children to see.

Begins June 20. Intended for adult audiences.

This is what you get when you give a drummer a guitar. About a year ago my dad gave me one of his old guitars when he was down visiting me. Since then I’ve had that thing in my hands almost every day. I really love playing guitar, but I usually treat the thing like a drum. This piece is inspired by Victor Wooten, no doubt. It’s also inspired by my lazyness, not wanting to push the strings down on the fret-board. This piece is played entirely with open strings, using the harmonics to move the… well, harmony.

The guitar you hear is not the one my dad gave me, it’s a new one I’m trying out… the agency sent it over for me to try.

Muddy

Oh how I love the blues. My love for the blues is deep and it is eternal. However, I do have a thing on the side with funky back beats as well. This is another totally demo version of what I’m calling “Muddy”. I really like this sound and I want to keep exploring this blending of old time country blues with modern dance beats. Hope you enjoy!

Blue Glass

I decided, after watching the bluegrass episode of King of the Hill, to pick up my ol’ mandolin. (The mandolin that my uncle is loaning me, indefinately. Thanks uncle!) I hadn’t touched it in months, up to this point. And here’s what spat out after a few hours of re-practicing. I call it “Blue Glass”. The ‘train’ beat on the drums is inspired by the tune “Devil Went Down to Georgia” by Charlie Daniels and his band. This is nowhere near as epic as that tune, but it might be a bit more catchy. That means that my tune will be annoyingly stuck in your head, while you struggle to remember the part that comes before “… devil’s in the house of the rising sun!” My apologies. This version is totally demo-style. I’m going to be using this track for a project I’m working on, but I don’t want to discuss any details yet. Just enjoy the music, and you might hear it again… new and improved!

Groovesound (to the Grassers)

A short while ago, an old school friend named Adam Grasser died. I had lost touch with Adam since high school, but was shocked to hear the news. He left behind a 2 year old daughter and a twin sister, among many others. The funeral was terribly sad, but it was a chance for a lot of people to come together. There were people I hadn’t seen or talked to in 5 years, emotions were high and everybody bonded. There were a lot of tears and a lot of hugs. It was such a bittersweet reunion under extremely unfortunate circumstances. Such is life.

I composed Groovesound while all these thoughts were flowing through my head. I was thinking about the Grassers and their terrible loss. This piece is instrumental, so the precice meaning and intent is really up to the listener. With that in mind, I’m officially dedicating this piece to Adam Grassers friends and family. My deepest condolences, I’m so sorry. I know there are no words that will make the pain go away and I know this song certainly won’t either. But I hope the song will remind you that however sad life can be, it will always be beautiful.

Piano Ballad

Here is a little piano ditty I came up with. I’m most likely going to keep working with this piece and probably use it with another project I’m working on (super secret, will give more details later!). But I hope you enjoy “Piano Ballad” as it is now. This is the 2nd draft.

The piece developed from a lot of improvising on the piano. I recorded it with a MIDI keyboard onto Garageband, so after I laid down what I liked, I chopped it up a bit and made a nice arrangement. And here it is….

Everybody’s got to be loved, or else they sing the blues. This song has been under my hands for months now and I’ve never known what to do with it. The lyrics finally came to me while I was digging a hole at my landscaping job. This song has nothing to do with the hole or my landscaping job. It’s just an ode to all the good lovers out there. You may be a good lover, or you may have a good lover. If not, consider being a pleaser and see how it works out. Tootsie Pop

I just met a cute chick, a cute little foxy red-headed thing.

It was like, totally random.I think she works with Tyler’s friend or something, anyway.

We went back to my place, you’ll never guess what she said.

She said:

How many licks does it take, to make that ‘tootsie’ pop?

Took me about 3 seconds to realize what a ‘tootsie’ was, and precisely what that would that would mean if it popped.

I hope I like it.

She said:

I certainly never hear it referred to as a ‘tootsie’ before, but I suppose ‘pop’ makes sense a little bit.

So I think I’m feelin’ good….

Predestination and Other Games of Chance

My first composing/scoring gig started last summer and has just been completed. Author J. Daniel Sawyer’s podcast novel Predestination and Other Games of Chance. A 27 chapter, character driven, sci-fi, fantasy, spy-thriller in complete dramatized audio with sound effects and original music (by me ) You can hear the entire book for free through iTunes or from Dan’s site.

The title track of the book is the opening theme music, which I composed and produced sometime last summer. It includes themes and motifs which pop up throughout the entire book. The music evolves with the story. Take a listen to the opener. I’ll post a few more samples a bit later but stay on the lookout for the fully mastered sountrack album, to release this summer. For sale. Hey, I gotta eat.

Your Mama’s Groove

Your mom heard this tune, and she hated it. That fact alone should tell you that you’ll love it. In truth, I actually love a lot of the music my mom listened to. B.B. King, Neil Young, Eric Clapton, Stevie Ray Vaughn, The Police…. all artists I first heard blaring at 7:00am on a Saturday morning or in the car on the way to baseball practice or something. At that time I hated it, but what do kids know anyway? “Your Mama’s Groove” isn’t anything like any of those artists. I’m not sure what it’s like. It’s made up of samples of my own drumming, mixed with a fuuuunky melody on the synth.

This tune is actually very funky. If you’re familar with “Clapping Music” by Steve Reich, then you’ll probably get what I’m going for. After the intro with all the goofy drum’n'bass licks, the drum set settles into a pattern where it grooves for 3 bars of 4/4 and one bar of 5/4. However, the ride cymbal pattern, tea-pot pattern (yes, i’m playing a metal tea pot) and half of the kick drum track play in 4/4 continuously. The effect is that each phrase is slightly different from the last, because the patterns align differently. I didn’t follow this as strictly as Steve Reich did, though. The last part stays in 4/4 with everything and it’s riddled with fills and other things that still keeps me guessing what’s coming next. I hope you enjoy!

Another personal track from “Happenings”, my own personal compilation of original music. This tune was recorded all in one night. The lyrics reflect my coming of age and paradigm shift I experience through my late college years. It reflects my personal fondness for a very misunderstood plant. Enjoy!

Left Two Hands is a track from Happenings. Happenings is a collection of music I make merely for the sake of loving music and wanting to create as much different stuff as possible. Each tune is inspired by something or other. Enjoy Left Two Hands. The voice you hear on this track is the lovely and talented Ali Janes-Paulsen. She’s a wonderful girl and talented actor who came by and layed down some freestyle. After she left, I decided to chop it up, put it to a beat and a nice chord progression and see what kind of studio magic I could give it. Enjoy!
